As i mentioned before, my love for coupons happened in stages. My coupon history includes initial thoughts that they were embarrassing. Then, i thought that Coupons were a hoax – a scheme to make people think they were saving.

Stage 2 – Coupons are a Hoax!

After the embarrassment faded, fast forward to college. Now, I’m miles away from home and money is more than tight. My full scholarship didn’t cover extras and when I moved off campus, my meal plan didn’t follow me. So, I’m a hungry, broke college student who needs to stretch the few dollars I have. Of course images of my mom’s crazy shopping trips coursed my memory. The only way I knew to save was to use coupons. I bought a Sunday paper with the inserts and attempted to find deals. I rode the bus to Walmart with some coupons and shopped.

At checkout, half the coupons didn’t work. i rushed through the ads and cut the coupons i thought would work. But I had used them incorrectly and at the end of the day, the price of the paper/coupons was greater than my total savings. Annoyed doesn’t adequately describe my disposition. At this point, I wrote off coupons as a gimmick and totally not worth the time it takes to cut them.
