Make Money on your Clutter!

Do this, take 5 minutes from your day and just do a walkthrough of your home. While breezing through, take a mental picture of things in your home that you are no longer using – the clutter. Those pots and pans you used to love until you got Rachel Ray’s new set. Those shoes that used to fit so comfortably before you had children and your feet expanded ever so slightly. That coat you loved until you simply stopped loving it. That basket that you used to put old magazines in that has been replaced by a bigger, better rack from HomeGoods. All the clothes and shoes your babies have outgrown. And the list goes on ……

Now take another bold step and actually amass them. Pull them out of the inner recesses of that dark hall closet and the upper dungeon of the attic. Blow off three years of accumulated cobwebs and dust and assess. Could these things be of value to someone? Are these items still nice enough that someone would want to buy them? Could I sell these things for a profit even if not a huge one?

Now, no matter how you answered these questions, think about this. These items are just sitting there occupying prime real estate in your house. You haven’t looked at the majority of them in the last six months at least, which means you more than likely don’t need them. So if you could use the space and don’t foresee needing the item, why not give it to someone who does?

There are countless ways to get rid of your excess and make money while doing it. Whether you choose to sell them on popular sites like Ebay or Poshmark, or you decide to sell them to a local consignment store like Plato’s Closet or Once Upon a Time, do something to declutter your life and replace some of the money you spent to buy them.

I did this recently. My community organizes a community yard sale once a year and for just $10, you can get a spot. So I signed up. I started with clothes and shoes. At the end of the day, I made $50 on just a handful of stuff – literally like 10 items. I still have so much more……. But this was a good start.

Be a bargain specialist and give others the opportunity to buy some of your things at a discounted price while you make some money as well.
