Every household with children under the age of 5 knows the need for batteries, batteries, and more batteries! When my four-year-old son was born, we bought a slew of rechargeable batteries and just recharged them as needed. Recently my husband and I realized that they weren’t holding as much charge as they usually do and have had to throw away some that even became corrosive. So we found ourselves removing batteries from one remote to put into a different one. That didn’t last long! The annoyance of that was enough to make me go on the prowl for some free batteries.
I had recently made a purchase at Office Depot for a healthcare company that gave me, the buyer, a free $25 gift card. Found that deal with a quick google search before clicking submit. So that’s where I started. Also, because I signed up for Office Depot rewards, I get coupons mailed to my house for dollar amounts off. For the month of September, I got a $10 off $30 purchase coupon. If I combined that with the gift card, that would give me $35 of products, $10 off that with the coupon, and another $25 dollars off that with the card – making it totally free. So, I walked into Office Depot looking for as close to $35 worth of batteries as I could find. Right in the front, there was a sale on Duracell batteries. Buy two, get one free. One 16-pack cost $13.99 so I took three packs which would end up at around $28. Adding another one would have put me too far above my desired total and eat into my savings potential. So, I went looking for those types of items you always need and can never really have too much of. What better than paper products? A recent hall gave me a nice stash of paper towels so I focused on the toilet paper. A sale on Charmin. Twenty double rolls for $6.49. Perfect!
At the checkout, one simple question. ‘Do you all take manufacturer coupons?’ To which my cashier replied with a smile. ‘We sure do!!!’ Like a kid in the candy store, I handed him two coupons that together took $.75 cents off my purchase. I know what you’re thinking. Just .75 cents?!?!? Yes! Every penny off counts. I was so proud. Remember, even if it’s only seven cents, its money that you worked for that will remain in your account. After the coupon took another $10 off and the gift card took another $25 off, my grand total for 40 rolls of tissue and 48 batteries?????? I’m sure you saw the picture already so building up anticipation is pointless. But, nonetheless, I spent .92 cents on everything!!!!!! I walked out of Office Depot with a beaming smile like I had just bought out the whole company.
Make saving a part of your life not some mission that lasts two weeks or a New Year’s resolution that is forgotten two months later. When saving is how your brain is tuned to operate, you’ll find ways to save even when they aren’t obvious. Be a bargain specialist!
