The last stage of my coupon history is a stark contrast to the first two. I went from being embarrassed by the need for coupons, to thinking coupons were a scheme and somehow ended up in love with coupons. Now, those little slips of paper are my life!
The transformation happened after college. I moved back home while I looked for a job. I found a temporary gig just to give me some income and I again attempted to save. “Cooooouuuuuuppppooonnnnssss. Cooooooooooooooupons!” I felt haunted by the little devilish sheets of paper that were supposed to help but never met up to their end of the bargain. I needed to stretch my quickly disappearing income so i reluctantly decided to give it one more try. Time for coupon 101.
I went shopping with my mother three times and paid extra attention to her strategies. She gave me hints and tips like, “1. Make sure you use your coupons on sale items not regular priced items to increase your savings. 2. Be sure to read the coupon. Looking at the picture on it is not enough.” Now, it was apparent what I was doing wrong. This is when the Bargain specialist in me was born.
Several years later, I’m a wife and a mom and though things are not remotely as tight now as they were then, knowing what I can get for free or almost free drives me to continue my guilty pleasure. I hunt for deals like a kid in a candy store! I love it when I conclude a shopping trip and my husband looks at me and says, “Hurry up and get in the car before they realize you just robbed them!” I laugh everytime. But honestly, I ‘legally rob’ stores ALL the time.
